Alicia M. Jay, Ph.D.
Arts Administrator, Educator, & Marketer
Alicia was born in upstate New York and was raised in Florida. She currently resides in western Indiana where she teaches Theater Management and Administration at Indiana State University. As an arts administrator, Alicia likes to be a part of creative administration—Marketing and Social Media, and she has a passion for sustainability. Additionally, she likes supporting artists as their dreams come to life on the stage—especially forming partnerships with individuals and community organizations to support the arts.
Ever the educator, Alicia fuses hands-on activities with theoretical approaches. Her pedagogical approach can be summated as student-centric, holistic, and practical. Belonging, Inclusivity, Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and Sustainability (BIDEAS) are the foundation to her approach to teaching.
In the academic realm, Alicia is currently co-editor her second book project, an anthology of contemporary arts administration practices. Her research interests includes how arts administration intersects with sustainability, social media, and artificial intelligence (AI).
Alicia loves when her research takes her to new places; her research, and wanderlust, have taken her around the globe including Bermuda, Finland, Iceland, Japan, Scotland, South Korea, Spain, and Sweden. She is always on the lookout for the next speaking engagement or research opportunities abroad.
When not working offstage, Alicia can sometimes be found onstage as fight choreographer. She holds safety above all else, including both physical and emotional safety. As a fight choreographer, Alicia choreographs based on Biomechanics, physiology, and psychological reasoning. Some of her favorite fights she has choreographed is a 3-on-1 saber sword fight in Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, a hair-pulling, snot-wiping "girl fight" between a young girl and her runny-nosed bully in Lisa Kron's Well, a Greco-Roman wrestling display of masculine prowess in Kaufman and Hart's You Can't Take it With You, and the massive final battle between the creatures of Narnia and the White Witch and her minions in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, which included broadsword, double dagger, karambit, quarterstaff, and unarmed fighting with 20+ fighters.
In 2016, Alicia founded Long Dog English Co., a one-stop-shop for any English-based project. Whether it is editing, proofreading, tutoring, coaching auditions or public speaking, designing résumés or logos, conducting mock interviews, or transcribing documents, LDEC has served clients from around the globe—especially in the Middle East, Africa, and China.
Alicia earned her Doctorate in Fine Arts - Theatre (Arts Administration) from Texas Tech University. She earned her Master of Arts in Speech (Theatre) from Louisiana Tech University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Arts from Flagler College.
In her free time, Alicia dabbles in tilt-shift photography, stained glass, attempts to keep a garden alive, occasionally performs stand-up comedy, and plays with her miniature dachshund, Poppy.
